The Taipei Shambhala Meditation Group happily hosted Shambhala President Richard Reoch for three days during his October 2008 tour of Asia. This followed Acharya Arawana Hayashi’s earlier February 2008 visit to Taipei which featured an inspiring program: “Shambhala and the Great Eastern Sun Vision.”

President Reoch gave talks to the public and to the meditation group. In the public talk, “Going Deeper in Meditation”, Richard taught the nine stages of peaceful abiding according to the Sakyong’s Turning the Mind Into an Ally. In addition, he presented detailed instruction on feeling the breath in the body as it affects the chest and abdomen. His talk broadened the participants’ knowledge of shamatha meditation. The members loved Richard’s kindness, humor, and gentle style of teaching, and they wish to learn more from him.

President Reoch gave individual interviews to all group members. All in all, the members from the Taipei Shambhala Meditation Group felt his public talk, meditation instruction, and private interview sessions were very inspiring, practical, and helpful.

Taipei Shambhala Meditation Group was established in the summer of 2007, following Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche’s two book tours to Taiwan and Singapore, Turning the Mind Into An Ally in 2005 and Ruling Your World in 2007. The group is still very small in size, but has been gathering each week since its inception in order to meditate and study together. The group also hosts a nyinthun every month.

In Richard’s recent visit, the group asked how they might continue further on the Shambhala Buddhist path. They also expressed their deep longing for the Sakyong and Acharyas to visit Taipei again and again.

President Reoch also had the auspicious opportunity to meet with the Master Sheng Yen from Dharma Drum Mountain, an international Buddhist cultural and educational foundation founded by Chan Master Sheng-yen. During their hour together, the president gave Master Sheng Yen a letter from the Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, along with the DVD of “Living Peace” and a calligraphy of “E MA HO” that the Sakyong had made especially for Master Sheng Yen. The Master was clear that Dharma Drum intends to cooperate with Shambhala in the near future.

Venerable Master Sheng Yen entered into Parinirvana in Taiwan on February 3rd, 2009. Read more here.
