Naropa Announces New President
Dr Stuart Lord will take up the position of President of Naropa University on 1 July 2009, leaving his position as Associate Provost at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Dr Lord has participated in programs at Karme Choling and very much values his connection with the Shambhala community.
The Sakyong, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche, as the lineage holder of Naropa University, has worked closely with Marty Janowitz, the chair of the Naropa Board of Directors, and the Presidential Search Committee throughout the recruitment process.
“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Lord to the presidency of Naropa,” the Sakyong said today. “His spiritual journey draws strength from his Christian roots as well as the meditative and Buddhist disciplines. As the president of Naropa, he will be in a position to benefit humanity, as he has been especially successful in bringing the academic community into engagement with the world. I look forward to supporting his activity and leadership of Naropa. I believe he and the university are poised to leap forward towards fulfilling the vision inspired its the Vidyadhara when he founded Naropa.”
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Tom Coburn for his tremendous contribution and energetic leadership of Naropa during his presidency. I have very much appreciated his spirit, his contemplative approach and his personal dignity,” the Sakyong said.
The Sakyong also expressed his gratitude to Marty Janowitz, who has chaired the board of Naropa throughout this period of tremendous development. “Marty has been at the helm with great strength of vision. He has done so much to serve the inspiration of our lineage in establishing and developing Naropa into a leading institution in the field of contemplative education,” he said.
