Jyekundo in ruins after the earthquake.

Khenpo Tsering of Surmang Monastery has been able to recharge his cell phone from a battery at his house and phoned Lyndon Comstock of the Konchok Foundation last night. Lady Konchok was also able to speak with Khenpo Tsering, and asked him about the relatives of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche who live in Jyekundo.

Their house is heavily damaged and will have to be rebuilt but it did not collapse. None of the Vidyadhara’s relatives were killed, but it is not known if any were injured. He confirmed that Karma Senge Rinpoche was at Kyere and not at Jyekundo when the earthquake took place.

Khenpo estimated that local people believe about two to three thousand people have been killed in Jyekundo and fifteen to twenty thousand injured, and many more in outlying areas, but no one knows and that is just a guess.

Many monks are arriving in Jyekundo from monasteries, including Surmang Dutsi Til, that were not damaged in the earthquake and are helping with relief and rescue work. At least forty carloads of monks will be arriving today from Serta monastery, as well as Trungpa XII Rinpoche (who is
coming from Derge). Aten Rinpoche is already assisting Khenpo Tsering in Jyekundo.

The monks are working alongside troops to dig in the wrecked buildings to look for people and to distribute food.

Based on estimates of the funds being generously pledged to the Konchok Foundation, Khenpo Tsering has started distributing relief for families from Surmang who were living in Jyekundo. He plans to expand that effort further today.

Khenpo drove to Thrangu monastery yesterday because he heard that the damage was so severe there. He said that there were a lot of people digging in the ruins. None of the monks’ housing there is still standing. There are two villages very close to Thrangu monastery where there is no longer a
single house still standing so a lot of people must have died there as well. Aten Rinpoche has two cousins who were killed at Thrangu monastery.

Khenpo asked that everyone in the Shambhala mandala include all those who have died in the earthquake in their prayer and practices. He also asked Lyndon to pass along his thanks for all those who have donated money to help those who have suffered from the earthquake.

Donations may be made to Konchok Foundation (www.konchok.org) for earthquake relief.

Major event to aid earthquake victims on Sunday to be offered mandala-wide

The Boulder Shambhala Center will host a major event Sunday evening to aid victims of the huge earthquake that has devastated the Surmang and Jyekundo area. The event will include tonglen and other sacred practices, updates from various people and organizations who have contacts in the affected region, and a short film about the area, its people and the devastation.

Other centres are invited to host similar events. These can take place at any time.

The Boulder Center invites everyone to join its event through a global broadcast offered by Shambhala Online. To join, you will need a computer with a wired, high speed internet connection. The online link will be: http://shambhalainternational.adobeconnect.com/tibet / Participants simply need to click on it and sign in. You will not require a password.

The Boulder event, expected to last one hour, will start at 7:00pm Mountain Time. Please log in 5 or 10 minutes before that hour. Since this will be too late for many locations (it cannot be earlier because of a weekend program being held there), centres and individuals wishing to use a recording of the event at their own gatherings in the following days should check for a Shambhala News Service announcement Monday.

For those wishing to join, the corresponding times in North America are: 6 pm Pacific, 7 pm Mountain, 8 pm Central, 9 pm Eastern, 10 pm Atlantic Time. For European and Asian times, please calculate accordingly.
