New Protector Practice

The Nalanda Translaion Committee has compiled a short explanation of three of the least familiar figures within the new chant: Protectors of the Three Courts, composed by the Sakyong.

Entitled: Background Information on “Protectors of the Three Courts”, this document is available here: http://www.shambhala.org/ntc/pdf/Protectors-of-the-Three%20Courts-Background-Information.pdf

It may also be found by going to the New Publications page of the Nalanda Translation Committee website and clicking on the first link mentioned under Public: http://www.shambhala.org/ntc/publications/new-publications.htm

The Kalapa Acharya’s letter regarding this practice, first sent out on 26 March, follows.

To the Shambhala Sangha,

As the Sakyong and Sakyong Wangmo await the arrival of their first child, His Majesty has been increasingly interested in the household as one of the most important sites of practice and realization. It is through experiencing the sacred in our everyday lives, in our families, and in our living spaces that the Kingdom of Shambhala will manifest more fully in our world.

With this basic inspiration in mind, the Sakyong has composed a protector practice invoking all of the protectors of Shambhala entitled Protectors of the Three Courts. This practice is particularly powerful as a way to invoke protection, health, and well-being for Khandro Tseyang while she is pregnant, and to request a healthy birth of their child. Through the genuine heart of longing, offering, and invocation, we also link our personal households and everyday experience with the Sakyong and the Sakyong Wangmo as they await their child’s birth.

You will find Protectors of the Three Courts ready for printing in the section Chants in the Practice Manual http://www.shambhala.org/members/ps/manual

The practice instruction is to chant the Protectors of the Three Courts daily during Khandro Tseyang’s pregnancy whenever protector chants are already practiced. This chant can be included in our chant books as the final protector chant before the Concluding Request to the Protectors and can be practiced as a group. It can also be part of any student’s daily practice at home. If someone is interested in devoting more attention to this chant during these next months, it could be repeated three times. If someone is on retreat, it could be repeated for an hour if you would like. It should be chanted during dusk. As we chant, we can especially keep the Sakyong Wangmo in our heart and mind.

Let us join together as a sangha and invoke the power of all of the protectors to arise instantly.

In the Great Eastern Sun,
Adam Lobel
Kalapa Acharya
