Letter from the Surmang Leadership

The Twelfth Trungpa, Chokyi Senge

This letter regarding the Surmang shedra was written in Tibetan and signed by Chokyi Senge Trungpa XII Rinpoche, Aten (Chetsang) Rinpoche, and Surmang Khenpo; it was translated into English by Gerry Wiener.

To the Lord of Refuge Sakyong Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche, the entire Shambhala community possessing unchanging authentic faith, and all other altruistic and kind benefactors:

As you possess merit and good fortune equal to the expanse of space, it is certain that immense waves of great benefit for the teachings and beings will increase like the waxing moon.

Even though those of us here at Surmang are relying only on samaya, through the compassion of the precious jewels, we are enjoying happiness and avoiding the oppression of the four maras.

Lord of Refuge Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, the Shambhala community and those benefactors possessing virtuous altruism and kind generosity:

Through your kindness the majority of the work of rebuilding the Shedra at Surmang Dudtsi Til is now close to completion. The Shedra at Surmang will be different from other shedras since it will offer a variety of different classes that will be available to all, boys and girls, householders and monastics. As a result there is no doubt that there will be vast benefit.

In the past, the Lord of Refuge Trungpa Rinpoche Chokyi Gyatso invited the great Khenpo Gangshar Wangpo to Surmang to establish the Surmang Shedra so that it would be of great benefit not only to Surmang but to the entire world. This is well-known by all.

It is now time for the heart-felt aspiration of the Lord of Refuge Trungpa Rinpoche Chokyi Gyatso to come to fruition. Through the power of the compassion of the Lord of Refuge Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, the vast benevolence of male and female practitioners of the Shambhala community and the kind altruism of others, the construction will be completed. We are confident and have aspiration that the Shedra will be of benefit not only to Surmang but to the entire world in accord with Trungpa Rinpoche’s wish.

Based on this we would like to request your help as we have done previously so that we can quickly complete the restoration work and fully establish the Surmang Shedra.

We appreciate your full consideration of this matter and aspire for your good health and well-being.
