Buddhist Youth Gather for Peace

For the fourth time, young Buddhists from all over the world and of all traditions will gather in Germany for the Buddhist Youth Festival from December 27 – January 1, 2011.

Last year’s program included 90 participants, between the age of 16 and 30-something, and was our largest gathering so far. The group was diverse with people from all kinds of traditions and countries including Spain, Brazil, Estonia, France, Vietnam, Belgium, USA, Denmark, Slovenia, Holland, Switzerland and Germany. The atmosphere of the festival was soft, open, touching, genuine, creative and very inspiring. Like other years, there was also a substantial number of people new to meditation and Buddhism.

The theme of this year’s gathering is Peace Within, Peace in the World. We will be exploring several topics through prominent guest speakers, workshops, discussions, and by learning to apply Buddhist teachings in our everyday lives. Meditative practices such as twice-a-day group meditation and yoga will set the tone throughout the program. Meditation rooms are open all day for those who would like to deepen their practice. We will also be exploring how meditation can influence us as artists through discussion and practices that incorporate dance, painting, cooking, music, calligraphy, flower arranging, and photography. In social engagement, we will discover the many ways we can benefit our world, alleviating the suffering of others. New this year is a four-day workshop for young people who have been studying and practicing as part of a Buddhist Sangha for at least two years. The goal is establishing a dialogue and friendship between different traditions. Of course there is always space to just be together, share experiences, have fun, eat, drink and celebrate the New Year!

The festival will take place in the old and beautiful hotel-castle Schloss Heinsheim. The Buddhist Youth Project and Shambhala Europe are hosting the event. For more information and registration see www.buddhistyouthproject.org or our page on Shambhala Europe’s website.

For a short impression of the first festival watch a video on YouTube or a documentary made by Dutch television.
