Summer 2011: 25th Anniversary of the Parinirvana of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche

In 2012, we will be observing the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Vidyadhara’s Parinirvana. This will be an important moment in the life of our community. It will be an opportunity to appreciate our great good fortune to have been influenced by the Vidyadhara and his teachings, and to celebrate his continuing legacy both in Shambhala and the world.

The Sakyong, Jamgön Mipham Rinpoche, has been discussing with us how we can use this anniversary in ways that enable us to explore the preciousness of his father’s teachings and the continuing strength and presence of the Shambhala vision and Shambhala world. He would like us work together to create a powerful and focused set of events.

To spearhead the planning and coordination of the anniversary events, he has asked a small group of us to work together. That group consists of President Reoch (representing Shambhala), Dr Mitchell Levy (representing the Mukpo Family) and Ms Carolyn Gimian (representing the Chögyam Trungpa Legacy Project). Sangyum Wendy Friedman will work closely with that group to ensure overall coordination for the many events and activities being planned.

Some of the highlights already involved are:

A public exhibition in Pier 21 (Canada’s Immigration Museum) Halifax, detailing the immigration to Nova Scotia of the Vidydhara’s students and the subsequent establishment and growth of the Shambhala Community there. The exhibit will open in mid-January and close on April 4th, 2012.

A series of lectures and gatherings, to take place at various locations in North America and Europe, for presentations and discussions on different aspects of the Vidydhara’s teaching and heritage. These may be spread throughout the year.

A global observance – likely involving a global broadcast – of the Vidyadhara’s parinirvana on and around 4 April 2012.

An offering of the Sadhana of Mahamudra Abhisheka, by the Sakyong, to our entire community and for all practitioners with devotion to the Vidyadhara from other Buddhist communities.

We want to alert you to the fact that we are beginning this planning now. We would like to make sure that you keep the days:

Friday 30 March to Wednesday 4 April 2012

clear in your schedule since it will be in that period that there will be mandala-wide practices, broadcasts and events.

You will be hearing much more about this in the coming months and we look forward to working with you in making this a historic occasion and a fitting tribute to the incomparable vision and impact of the Vidyadhara.
