Global Practice for Massacre Victims as Humanity is Shocked

The entire Shambhala community is invited to engage in practice for all those whose lives have been affected by the massacre yesterday at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, USA. The killing that took the lives of 20 children between the ages of five and ten, plus teachers and other adults, is the latest in a global litany of lethal rampages that have shocked humanity.

The Sakyong, Jamgon Mipham Rinpoche, who is currently in secluded retreat, has always asked that at such times we hold everyone who has been traumatized by such tragedies in our hearts and practice. This can include individual or group practice of tonglen, and in Shambhala Centers or groups, the recitation of the Heart Sutra, repeating the mantra 108 times.

It may also be helpful for practitioners, individually or in groups, to contemplate the Sakyong’s recent Treatise on Enlightened Society as a ground for meditating on what has happened — not only the mass killing and the immediate aftermath — but also the social impact that it is having in people’s hearts, in families and schools, in the media, and in debates about safety and security in human society. Those who wish could arrange dialogues or discussions among practitioners or friends to speak from their hearts and create the compassionate and unconditional space in which to hear others share their contemplations.

The President of Shambhala, Richard Reoch, has posted an extract from the Treatise on his online column, From Our President, which people may wish to take as a possible basis for such contemplations. He has also invited people to post their comments on that site as an online focal point for the reflections of our global community.
