Shambhala Times Updates from the Inside Out
Editor’s Column

by Sarah Lipton
Shambhala Times Editor-in-Chief

Is it possible to feel deeply into our humanity in the midst of our speedy, chaotic world? Can we truly touch in to the underling basic-ness of our experience? What would it mean to express ourselves in society from this ground of goodness? What does the Sakyong mean by “original peace”?

These questions, and more, are what we explore on the Shambhala Times, on a daily basis.

You may have noticed, but if not, we’re delighted to share with you that we have been working harder than ever to bring you live on-the-ground news stories from important programs and events throughout the Shambhala mandala. Our recent success with live, up-to-date reporting from the Imagining Peace event in Chicago was a ground-breaking success, and we’re working hard to line up a similar team of reporters in San Francisco and London to chronicle the festivals Sakyong Mipham will be leading there later this year. Thanks to all who have been involved with this exciting venture!

We know you eat up our Scene and Heard column, so we’re working to build teams of reporters in the major cities of our Shambhala mandala. Interested in participating? Please join us! Our doors are open, and we would love to welcome you aboard our Shambhala Times Team! Join us on the Shambhala Network in the Times Team group (you will need your Shambhala login), or send us an email at: [email protected].

Furthermore, we are hard at work to bring more Shambhala Centers online with their blogs. To highlight a few, we’d like to thank Los Angeles, Brunswick, Washington DC, Dallas, Toronto, Victoria, Portland, and Shambhala Mountain Center for their rich, active blogs that are so important in giving both our own community a window into our Shambhala world, and more importantly provide a rich forum for non-Shambhalians to get to know us better. If you are a writer, reporter, editor, photographer, videographer, or artist of any variety and want to activate your center’s blog, contact us to find out how. It’s easy.

Several new columns are beginning to take off that we’d like to highlight. With the guidance and direction of Acharya Susan Chapman and Senior Teacher Russell Rodgers, our Dharma Teachings Column is filling out with a rich selection of stories and teachings. Providing the essence of our practice and society in Shambhala, these teachings weave together the fabric of our experience both on the cushion and off.

Rolling out in June with host Leslie Gossett, of Northern California, will be a newly enriched Youth and Families Column. Look for stories about Sun Camp, youth events, and parenting tips. This month the Kitchen Wisdom Column, hosted by chef Lisa Harris, will begin to explore the wide world of Shambhala’s kitchens with interviews and stories from the hearth of our homes. Finally, for now, our Shambhala culture will be explored further with a new regular column from Amanda Hester of the Shambhala Office of Culture and Decorum.

So keep reading, keep sharing, keep sending your content in, and join the dialogue by using our comments function on articles. We want to know what you think, what you feel, how you view the world. We want to join together in the unfurling of original peace.
