David Brown is the Executive Secretary to Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and directs the Office of the Kalapa Court. David was born and raised in Indiana, joining the Shambhala sangha in Boulder in 1976. He received instruction in thangka painting from the Rongae family at Naropa University. After earning his Masters degree in Buddhist and Western Psychology in 1979, David worked in various administrative positions at Naropa University and Shambhala (then called Vajradhatu). He served on the Karme Choling staff for several years, where he met his wife, Dinah. Trained as a Kusung to the Sakyongs, David moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1986 to serve, with Dinah, in the Kalapa Court. He also worked with individuals in psychiatric distress as a member of Windhorse Associates. In 1987 their daughter Berkeley was born in Halifax. In 1990, David was appointed Executive Secretary to Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and has served since then in the Office of the Kalapa Court. David's bodhisattva name is Dharma Sun of Equanimity and his Shambhala name is Nyima Sangpo.

Seven Riches of a Sakyong

The Seven Riches of the Sakyong are traditional, universal and practical contemplations on how we can handle ourselves. They were introduced to the community by the Druk Sakyong (Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche) at the 1978 Kalapa Assembly. The accompanying photos are of rupas given to the Druk Sakyong late in his life and used as offerings between the Sakyong and Sakyong Wangmo during their wedding.
