***UPDATED ON MARCH 28***
After delays and technical difficulties, His Holiness the Seventeenth Karmapa appeared live to deliver his Saga Dawa address on May 28 at approximately midnight in India.
In his address, His Holiness spoke about the importance of ethics in all our decision making. He stated that if our concern is too narrowly focused on our own individual success, then we will constantly be caught in reacting to the ups and downs of daily life. When there are problems, he emphasized, we should not be discouraged; rather we could become inquisitive and try to find the knowledge and courage to face the situation–whether it involves our own suffering or the suffering of others.
In other words, we don’t have to get rid of our problems to be happy. There will always be problems. So, he concluded, it is not worth getting carried away by little things, like a traffic jam on the way to work. If we relax and appreciate the simple things in life–like the air we breath–then we will feel satisfaction. In the final analysis, the Karmapa reminded us, relaxation is the way to bring happiness to our minds; there is no other way.
