Dharma Teachings, Sakyong and FamilyMeeting Don Season with Mindfulness
Sakyong Mipham teaches on meeting don season with mindfulness. This year, don season begins Tuesday, February 22nd and concludes on Thursday, March 3rd.
In the lunar calendar, the weeks preceding each New Year can be fraught with inner and outer obstacles. In these teachings, offered to the worldwide Shambhala community in 2008, Sakyong Mipham describes the season as well as the nature of obstacles and how they arise. He suggests ways we can meet these obstacles with practice, contemplation, and practicality to emerge with a “fresh start” that can resolve the past and elevate our view in the coming year.

Thank you, dear Sakyong, for this talk. The practitioner that was hit by a car that you spoke of could have very well been me. Reflecting on and purifying this incident stays with me always, as well as the Vidyadhara’s response that it was not being mindful that caused so much harm. As you said, he also said that this mindlessness, coupled with an attitude of arrogance, becomes a kind of identity which makes one blind to one’s own gentleness and the ability to appreciate each moment. Speediness, fear, wanting more and being constantly distracted disrupts this continuity of awareness and allows the dons to slip in. It is humbling and helpful to reflect. With gratitude to you and the protectors . . .

When we slow down, “the obstacles have less opportunity to sabotage the situation.”
Huh? Sabotage?
But aren’t obstacles the path? They don’t get in the way, they are the Way. Isn’t this supposed to be The Mishap Lineage? I don’t get it?

Yes, thank you for the link and belated “Thank You” to Rinpoche for the teaching! It will make the Mamos recitation this evening more potent.

How wonderful to be able to sit here in my own home and see and hear the Sakyong, who seemed to be addressing what is happening for me in this time. I found it most inspiring. Thank you for making it available. Better nip upstairs now and do the Mamos…
