Personal Experience of Basic Space

Calligraphy by Vajra Regent Osel Tendzin

In honor of the anniversary of the parinirvana of Vajra Regent Osel Tendzin, the Shambhala Times is pleased to present this community talk given in December of 1987 in Burlington, Vermont, offered to us by the generosity of the Vajra Regent Osel Tendzin Library & Archives. In this talk, the Regent clearly expounds upon the personal experience of basic space. This is, as he says, a talk on basic dharma. The Vajra Regent logically articulates the process by which we come to understand our basic being. As he says, “the mind is space…and this is pointing to everyday experience by undercutting ego.” Through the practice of meditation, we train our mind and body in being present, we “are in fact not supposed to think about anything at all…and this is called meditation practice.” Through meditation, we practice the discipline of not deliberately acting, and this allows our habitual patterns to dissolve into the emptiness of space. Our mind then becomes like the sky, free from clouds.
