Maritime’s First Regional Gathering

KI KIby Jean Ahlgren, Fredericton, New Brunswick

In May, Shastri Veit Weber accompanied by Vallie Stern, attended the 3 Pillar Leadership Training gathering with Sakyong Mipham at Karme Choling. Inspired by what they had learned and wanting to share this with others, they arranged to have a Canadian Maritime regional gathering. On Sunday July 7th the Fredericton, New Brunswick Shambhala Center, hosted this first gathering, with 19 in attendance. Members came from Saint John and Sackville, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Inland.

Throughout the day there was much interaction. The sharing included dialogue groups and discussions, and a lovely lunch. Shastri Weber spoke of the importance of volunteering and the need for leadership within the three pillars, that of governance, education and practice, and protection. He spoke of the quality of the path as the ebb and flow of the journey, describing it as, “Becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

In the afternoon Vallie shared her understanding and experience of what is meant by ‘culture’ and how we might develop the ground for deepening Shambhala’s culture, particularly through meditation, conversation and celebration.

Of course the day went by far too quickly, and in our final go-around the general comments expressed a very real sense of connection to each other. It was evident that the valuable lessons of the day would be taken back to our various centers and put into practice.
