Shambhala News ServiceSakyong Sends Prayers for Victims of Tragedies
Message to the Shambhala Community
I have been saddened to hear of the tragedies that occurred this weekend in Bodh Gaya, Quebec and San Francisco.
Bodh Gaya, where nine explosions within the temple complex have caused injuries, plays a significant role in the Buddhist tradition, as it is the place where the Buddha attained full enlightenment. As well, it is the place where I was born, so it has personal importance for me.
The village of Lac-Megantic, Quebec, a few hours from Karme Choling and Montreal, was devastated by a huge train explosion, killing many and forcing much of the community to evacuate.
San Francisco has been the site of many joyful events, including “Creating Enlightened Society,” a gathering where I taught recently. This weekend’s plane crash is a shocking reminder of the preciousness and unpredictability of our lives.
In the midst of pain and heartbreak, let us touch our own goodness and open our hearts, generating love and compassion for the victims of these violent circumstances, as well as for their loved ones. As you read this message, please join me in sending thoughts and prayers.
With love and blessings,
The Sakyong

The destruction of four reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan is the real global tragedy that has been worsening and will worsen forever. This is the reality that is now beginning to leak into the news. Lethal radioactive elements have been and are poisoning the Pacific Ocean and the whole Earth since 3/11/11, and will do so for the rest of human time.
