Claudia Chender Wins Election

Canadian leader raised in the Shambhala Buddhist community wins a seat in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly

by editors of the Shambhala Times

This week in Halifax, Claudia Chender, a lifelong Shambhala Community member, was elected as a New Democratic Party (NDP) representative to the provincial legislature in Nova Scotia. Claudia won the seat with nearly 40% of the vote. As MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly), she will represent her community’s interests in this significant public service position. Dan Scott, a friend and colleague from Mindful Magazine, said that it “sure feels like a milestone to have someone who holds the Shambhala vision enter public office in the capital.”

The NDP is a social-democratic party which operates at both the provincial and federal  levels, within Nova Scotia and across Canada. The party’s base in Nova Scotia started in the urban areas of the province, particularly in Halifax, and since then has been growing in areas outside the capital. Chender won election in the riding of Dartmouth South, a provincial electoral district that elects only one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. She joins six other members of the NDP also serving in the Assembly.

Chender was raised in the Shambhala Buddhist community. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Dalhousie University, and also a bachelor of laws from the University of Victoria. Although a lawyer by training, Chender is also a small business owner and a publisher. She lives in the district with her husband and three young children.“This is an important moment. The values and social structures that progressive people in Nova Scotia have long taken for granted are being challenged. This is the time to come together to find solutions to the problems that challenge our communities, and to envision and invest in our future,” said Chender.

“Dartmouth South is an amazing community. We have a hospital, a community college, schools, parks, lakes, and a thriving and growing jewel of a downtown. It’s my home and I couldn’t be more proud of it,” said Chender. “I look forward to earning the support of our community and continuing the tradition of strong NDP representation.”

“Claudia is part of a new generation of New Democrats,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. “She is a person of compelling character and ability, and will be a strong voice for the people and communities of Dartmouth South.”

    Claudia,
I can’t stop smiling. Congratulations to you, and to your community for electing you and having you to represent them. I think I’ve been waiting for something like this since getting to know so many of your generation at Karme Choling all those years ago.
    Well done.
