On a sunny August afternoon, Jetsun Drukmo’s friends and admirers gathered at the Kalapa Court in Boulder to celebrate her fifth birthday.

To kick off the festivities the children enjoyed a treasure hunt, cheerfully collecting goodies from around the backyard silhouetted against the beautiful Rocky Mountains. As adult guests chatted over lawn games, children caught bouncing beach balls. Mr. James Thorpe offered a mini live concert of songs, culminating in a sing-along of ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley.

Jetsun Drukmo blew out her birthday candles much to the delight of everyone (except perhaps Jetsun Yudra, who naturally wanted to blow them out herself.) Luckily, Jetsun Yudra did get to eat a big piece of the outrageously delicious ice cream cake, along with Jetsun Drukmo and everyone else. Next Jetsun Drukmo opened her presents, the king of which was a giant stuffed tiger from her father. As each child came and offered a gift to the birthday girl, she offered them a gift in return. Jetsun Dzedron did her part by sleeping peacefully through the entire party.

Finally the party drew dramatically to a close as the Dorje Kasung took down the colors to the tune of the Shambhala anthem. All in all it was a delightful summer birthday celebration and a last hurrah before it’s back to school for everyone – most notably, the birthday girl herself who starts kindergarten next week!

  1. Sounds like the party of my dreams – maybe for the 70th!
