The Shambhala Times stops bringing you the news

by Carol Henderson

Two months ago, I was informed that the post I had held for years as Editor of the Shambhala Times was ending due to financial concerns. Shambhala could no longer afford to support its long-time online newsletter, and my work with the Times would end as of October 1st. Since then, I have been reflecting on the many connections this role has brought into my life, the wonderful writers and photographers and section editors, the amazing IT support people. I very much appreciate their generosity and their commitment. Into my life and the lives of our readers, they have brought hundreds of people and ideas, ceremonies and actions, talks and teachings, images and inspirations.

Having published every 48 hours without fail for so many years, the long run of the Shambhala Times comes to an end tomorrow. A sad moment, full of poignancy and loss, but also a time to look back at all of the many gifts that have been shared. From October 1st through the end of December 2018, the Times will be reprinting a selection of its most popular stories, and I hope you will enjoy them. As for 2019 and beyond, who knows? If Shambhala decides to fund the Times again, I would be happy to return as editor. If not, I will always be grateful for the chance to be associated with this very special publication, the Shambhala Times.

    Hi Larry,
Thanks for your note — much appreciated! Monthly cost for the Times has been $1200.

Terrible news. Thanks to you, Carol, for all your hard work and dedication; it showed in the regularity of postings, the high quality of the articles and aesthetic touches you added to each posting. Would you mind sharing what the cost of operating the Shambhala Times is, on a monthly basis? With a target number, we who appreciate your work might be able to reach it, assuming such funds could be dedicated to that purpose.

  3. I wish you well, Carol!

    Carol,

Thank you for your service and dedication to the community as editor of the Shambhala Times. It is sad news that the publication cannot be supported at this time. As we go through this reassessment and restructuring, I hope we can find a way to bring back the Shambhala Times — and you as editor! All the best to you.

Thank you Carol for carrying on the essential community communication which Shambhala Online has provided. More than ever, our sangha needs the news of the organization, of each other, of our place in the world at large. I would happily add my 2 cent and more to the financial support needed to carry on. Waylon, count me in. I am certain there are many others who would do the same, given the focal conduit to take part.

Your dedication, that of your team and that of those who forged the way before you (yes, Sarah!), to the Shambhala world having a public voice- disseminating news, dharma, and personal insights to the world- has been a source of inspiration and joy to me over the many years. I still remember the hard copies!

Perhaps Waylon’s generous offer of support through Elephant can actualize? Fundraising? Charles and I would be glad to help. Many thanks, Carol. May the vision of the Great Eastern Sun be victorious.

  9. I am deeply saddened to see this news. Thank you for carrying my torch forward, Carol. May The Shambhala Times be reborn again when it is able!! Ki Ki So So!!

Thank you Carol…the Shambhala Times is a great inspiration to me and something that I looked forward to reading regularly. I learned so much from it. I would be glad to contribute with a donation if a fundraising effort is put underway…as one pother person said, we need this to follow the Shambhala world. Now as much as ever before!

Thank you Carol for your exertion and creativity! So much appreciated! All best in the next endeavors!

  12. I would think it would be easy to fundraise to keep this going–now more than ever we need uplifted communication.

Or, it’s been suggested by a fellow sangha-member that Elephant support this—I’d be happy to. We’re not rich but we are already set up as a huge site and would be happy to try to help.
